Yes. A driver may use a portable device, a smartphone, or any other wireless device if the device meets the ELD technical specs.
A portable ELD must be mounted in a fixed position during CMV operation and visible to the driver from a normal seated driving position.
What procedure should be followed if the driver operates several vehicles and therefore, multiple and compatible electronic logging devices (ELDs) are used to record a driver’s record of duty status (RODS) within a motor carrier’s operation?
If multiple, compatible ELDs are used to record a driver’s RODS within a motor carrier’s operation, the ELD the driver is operating most recently must be able to retrieve, retain and produce a complete ELD report for that driver, on demand, for the current 24-hour period and the previous 14 consecutive days.
