Federally regulated Canadian carriers and U.S. based motor carriers while operating in Canada to include vehicles registered GVW > 4,500 kgs (+logbook required) and companies providing extra-provincial transportation; Compliance date published is June 12, 2021.
No ELD required if: Short Term Rentals for 30 days – no renewal, extension, operating under Canadian statutory exemptions, operating under an administratively issued HOS permit, CMV manufactured before 2000, no RODS required if operating CMV within 160km from home terminal.
Basic HOS rules did not change with ELD mandate – rules regarding HOS are not affected by the ELD regulations.
ELD automatically records at certain intervals: date, time, location, engine hours/odometer, vehicle distance, engine power-cycles, and driver ID. FleetWaze ELDs allow you to survey hundreds of other data points as well.
The ELD records driving status once faster than 8 km/h (unless PY or YM), considers stopped at zero km/h for 3 seconds, after 6 minutes (no response to prompt) goes from D to ODND, recorded drive time cannot be edited or changed to non-driving time, edit trail recorded and available for review at roadside, certification of log is recorded into the ELD – no signature required and also includes off-duty deferral, Cycle I and Cycle II, traveling north of the 60th parallel, border crossings require ELD recording, 30-minute warning when reaching duty-/driving-hour limitation.
Driver may be on paper logs and MC shall repair/replace ELD within 14 days of malfunction or latest, return of driver to home terminal from planned trip and MC must maintain a register of malfunctions/diagnostics.
Transport Canada has partnered with the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) to set criteria for the Canadian ELD mandate.
ELDs certified under the FMCSA are NOT automatically certified in Canada. Fleetwaze ELDs will be certified.

Yes. A driver may use a portable device, a smartphone, or any other wireless device if the device meets the ELD technical specs.
A portable ELD must be mounted in a fixed position during CMV operation and visible to the driver from a normal seated driving position.
If multiple, compatible ELDs are used to record a driver’s RODS within a motor carrier’s operation, the ELD the driver is operating most recently must be able to retrieve, retain and produce a complete ELD report for that driver, on demand, for the current 24-hour period and the previous 14 consecutive days.
